Cook
A cook prepared meals for pay in a private household, hotel, boarding house, restaurant, hospital or other institution.
In 1900 enumerators were told to state the kind of service exactly, with examples such as housekeeper, cook or servant, and the place named: hotel, boarding house, hospital, institution or private family. The 1930 examples include cook, hotel.
In a great house the head cook ran the kitchen.
