Editor

An editor, in old records usually of a newspaper, chose and corrected what was printed and often wrote much of it.

Wiktionary defines an editor as a person at a newspaper, publisher or similar institution who edits stories and decides which ones to publish. The word can also mean someone who prepared a particular book or document for print.

The 1900 census instructions told enumerators to distinguish a journalist, editor or reporter from an author or other literary person who did not follow journalism as a distinct profession.
