Hatter

A hatter was a person who made, sold or repaired hats, usually men's felt hats.

Hatters shaped felt, often made from beaver or rabbit fur, into men's hats. The felting process once used mercury compounds, and long exposure could harm the workers' health.

In census returns a hatter is usually a man, while women who made women's hats were called milliners. Danbury, Connecticut, was a well-known hat-making town.
