Hotel keeper
A hotel keeper owned or ran a hotel, providing rooms and meals to travelers and longer-term guests.
In 1900 the census named hotel keeper, boarding-house keeper, restaurant keeper and saloon keeper as separate occupations to be written exactly, and told enumerators to tell a clerk in a hotel from a bartender.
From 1910 everyone whose usual home was a hotel, guests and staff alike, made up a single census family, so a hotel keeper may head a long list of clerks, cooks, servants and boarders.
