Huckster

A huckster was a small dealer who sold goods, often fresh produce, from a cart, stall or door to door.

In older records a huckster is simply a small-scale seller, frequently of fruit, vegetables, eggs or poultry, working from a wagon, market stall or on foot. The modern sense of a pushy or dishonest seller came later.

The 1880 census instructions told enumerators to use the word huckster wherever it applied, so it is common in city returns of that era.
