Husbandman
A husbandman was a farmer, in English and colonial usage a small farmer ranking below a yeoman.
Husband here means the master of a household, not a married man. In England a husbandman was a small landholder who farmed a modest holding and ranked below a yeoman.
Colonial deeds and wills often describe a man as husbandman, yeoman or gentleman. In America the ranks were looser, and husbandman often just meant farmer. The word is also why farming is called husbandry.
