Jeweler

A jeweler made, repaired or sold jewelry, working with gold, silver and set stones.

A bench jeweler combined many skills: stone setting, engraving, casting, polishing and the work of gold- and silversmiths.

The 1870 and 1880 instructions told enumerators not to call men jewelers if they made watches, watch chains or jewelry in large manufacturing establishments; those were factory workers to be described by their work. So a census jeweler is usually a shopkeeper or craftsman in his own trade.
