Piecer

A piecer was a child or young worker in a spinning mill who walked along the machines tying together broken threads.

Spinning mules had to be watched constantly, because threads snapped as the carriage moved. Each pair of mules was worked by a spinner, called a minder, helped by two boys, the little piecer and the big or side piecer, who joined the broken ends.

Dictionaries tie the word to children employed in 1800s English cotton and spinning mills. The mule itself was used in mills from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, so piecers appear in records from that span.
