Quarryman

A quarryman cut, drilled and blasted stone out of a quarry, splitting it into blocks for building or crushing.

Quarrymen worked in open pits of granite, marble, limestone, slate or sandstone. They drilled holes, split the stone with wedges or blasting powder, and moved huge blocks with derricks.

Quarry towns drew skilled workers from stone districts abroad, and quarry work was dangerous. The finished shaping was usually done by stonecutters.
