Stoker

A stoker shoveled coal into the furnace of a boiler on a steamship or in a plant, keeping up steam for the engines.

A stoker tended the fire that heated a boiler. Most of the job was heavy shoveling of coal into the firebox. On steam locomotives the same worker was usually called a fireman, while on steamships and at stationary engines, such as sawmills, he was usually a stoker.

On large ships, coal trimmers brought coal from the bunkers to the stokers. Navies kept stoker as a rank long after coal-fired ships were gone.
