Teacher
A teacher taught pupils, usually in a public or private school; census takers were asked to say what kind, such as teacher of music or teacher, public school.
Teacher is the general word for someone employed to instruct others, usually in a school. In census returns it covers everyone from a country schoolteacher to a private tutor.
The 1860 instructions asked for the kind, as teacher of French or of common school, and the 1900 list of professions separates teacher in school, teacher of music and teacher of art. Later entries add the school, as in teacher, public school.
