County home
County home was another name for a county poorhouse or poor farm; in New Hampshire, county homes of this kind lasted into the 1960s.
In states that put the poor in the care of counties, the county institution went by many names: county poorhouse, county farm, county infirmary or county home. New Hampshire counties kept county homes, really the old poorhouses, into the 1960s.
Residents were mostly elderly people without family support. Some county farms later turned into nursing homes. In Cheshire County, New Hampshire, the county farm's almshouse closed in 1975 and a county nursing home was built on the land.
