soldat

Soldat is Swedish for "soldier"; in household rolls it usually means an indelt soldier, supported by a group of farms and living in a soldier's croft.

Under the Swedish allotment system, the indelningsverket, groups of farms called a rote each had to provide and support one soldier, who got a small croft to live on. In parish rolls the soldat is listed at that croft with his wife and children, often with his regiment and number.

Soldiers were given a special surname, a soldatnamn, which differs from the patronymic used by his father and often by his children. His wife may appear as s:hu, soldat hustru.
