Summer complaint was the name for the diarrhea that killed many infants and toddlers each summer, when milk and food spoiled quickly. It shows up again and again in July and August on mortality schedules. The three birthplace columns are the person's own, the father's and the mother's; the 1880 census was the first to ask for the parents' birthplaces.
