Find a child in school records

Look for one ancestor as a child in a school census, attendance register or yearbook from the district where the family lived.

Children rarely signed deeds or went to court, but many went to school. In some places school censuses were taken every year and list parents and children between federal censuses.

Your steps this week
  1. Find the family in a census and note the township or district where they lived.
  2. Search the FamilySearch catalog by place under schools, and ask the state archives about records of closed districts.
  3. Copy each child's name and age, and the parent's or guardian's name, as written.
  4. Remember that an age is the age when the list was made, so a birth year from it can be off by one.
  5. Check a local library or historical society for yearbooks and school newspapers.
