Al

Al in the citizenship column of the 1900 to 1920 census means alien: the immigrant had taken no steps toward citizenship.

In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses, Al (for alien) marks a foreign-born person who had taken no step toward becoming a citizen.

Do not read it as a name or as Alabama, which is Ala. Compare censuses: a man marked Al in 1900 and Na in 1920 naturalized in between, which narrows where to look.
