Hin

Hin in the 1920 and 1930 census race column means Hindu, the label then used for people from India whatever their religion.

In 1910, people from India were counted under Other. The 1920 census added Hindu as a race category, written Hin, and 1930 kept it. The 1940 instructions shorten it to Hi.

The Census Bureau notes this was the only time a religious word was used as a race category in a U.S. census, so do not read Hin as proof of religion. The 1950 census dropped the category and told enumerators to report people from India as Asiatic Indians.
