In

In in the 1900 to 1940 census color or race column means Indian, that is American Indian; the 1870 and 1950 censuses wrote Ind.

The 1870 instructions told enumerators to write Ind. in the color column for Indians living outside tribal relations and exercising the rights of citizens. From 1900 to 1940 the code was In. In 1950 the code was Ind, and the category was renamed American Indian to tell it apart from people from India.

Do not confuse it with Ind., the abbreviation for Indiana, which appears in birthplace columns. An In entry is a reason to look at the Indian schedules and other records kept about American Indians.
