Ind.
In a census birthplace column, Ind. is the abbreviation for Indiana.
Ind. is an older abbreviation of Indiana, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.
Ind. had a second meaning in the census: the 1860 and 1870 instructions told enumerators to write Ind. in the color column for an Indian. In the birthplace column it is the state.
