Inf. is short for infantry, foot soldiers, as opposed to cavalry (Cav.) or artillery (Art.).
Inf. is the usual abbreviation of infantry in muster rolls, pension files, service records and gravestones.
It is part of a unit's name in Civil War and later records, as in 4th Tenn. Inf. The branch matters when searching, because a state often raised a 4th Infantry, a 4th Cavalry and a 4th Artillery, and they are different units with different records.
