Co.
Co. means county in a place name (Clark Co.) and company in a business name or military unit (Co. B).
Co. has two common meanings and the context makes clear which is meant. After a place name it is county, as in Clark Co., Ohio. After a letter or before a regiment it is company, the basic unit of an infantry regiment, as in Co. B, 4th Regt.
In business records and notices, & Co. means and company, the partners of a firm. Knowing the soldier's company letter is important, because many service records and rosters are arranged by company.
