Regt.
Regt. is short for regiment, the military unit, usually of about ten companies, that a soldier belonged to.
Regt. is the usual abbreviation of regiment in muster rolls, pension files, service records and gravestones.
Civil War units were named by number, state and branch, as in 4th Tenn. Inf. Regt. or 54th Mass. Regt. Knowing the regiment opens up unit histories, rosters and the regiment's movements, which tell you where your ancestor was on a given day.
