Jp

Jp in the census color or race column means Japanese; 1900 wrote JP and 1950 wrote Jap.

The 1900 instructions give JP for Japanese. The 1910 to 1940 instructions use Jp, and the 1950 instructions use Jap. All mean the same thing in the color or race column.

Do not mix it up with J.P., justice of the peace, which you meet in court and marriage records rather than in a census race column.

As seen in a recordSex, race and age columns of the 1920 census
