Jr.
Jr. after a name means junior, the younger of two men with the same name; it does not always prove that the two were father and son.
Jr. marks the younger of two men with the same name. Today it implies a son named after his father, but in older records do not take that for granted: confirm how the two men were related with a record that says so, such as a will or deed.
There was no fixed rule for what happened to the label when the older man died. A man listed as Jr. in one tax list may appear with no suffix, or as Sr., in later years, so track both men year by year rather than relying on the suffix alone.
