d.v.p.

D.v.p. (decessit vita patris) means the person "died in the lifetime of the father," that is, before the father died.

D.v.p. marks a son or daughter who died while the father was still living. In a pedigree it explains why a child who would normally inherit is skipped and the estate passes to a grandchild or a younger sibling.

A related form, d.v.m., means died in the lifetime of the mother. When you see d.v.p., the father's will may name that child's children as heirs in the dead child's place.
