Abbreviations · card C

&c.

&c. is the old way of writing etc. (et cetera), meaning "and so on" or "and the rest."

The & sign stands for et, the Latin word for and, so &c. reads as et cetera. It was the usual form in eighteenth and early nineteenth century writing.

In deeds and wills it often stands in for standard legal wording, such as "with all houses, orchards &c." It does not hide anything important about your ancestor, but in an inventory it can mean the appraisers did not list every small item.
