et al.

Et al. (et alii) means "and others": the record names one person and adds that there were more.

Et al. stands for et alii, and others. In deed and court indexes it often follows the first name of a group of buyers, sellers or defendants, such as heirs selling inherited land together.

When an index shows Jno. Ware et al., look at the full document, because the other names are often siblings, spouses or children. Deeds from a group of heirs can list a whole family.
