IORM
IORM means Improved Order of Red Men, a fraternal order founded in Baltimore in 1834 whose local lodges were called tribes.
The Improved Order of Red Men began in Baltimore in 1834 and claimed descent from the Sons of Liberty. Its rituals and titles imitated what members imagined to be Native American customs, yet until 1974 its bylaws admitted only white men.
Local units were called tribes, and dues paid for sick and funeral benefits, so IORM on a stone or in an obituary may lead to a tribe's records.
