Lieut.
Lieut. (also Lt.) is short for lieutenant, a junior officer who served under a captain.
Lieut. is the usual abbreviation of lieutenant in muster rolls, pension files, service records and gravestones.
A company normally had a first and a second lieutenant, shown as 1st Lieut. and 2d Lieut. Officer ranks are a useful clue, because officers left commissions, letters and orders that privates did not, and their names are easier to find in printed histories.
As seen in a recordOfficer list in a regimental roster
