Abbreviations · card M

m.

M. in a genealogy usually means "married," as in m. 1802; in other records it can mean male or mulatto, so check the column.

In family trees and printed genealogies m. stands for married and is followed by the date or the spouse's name.

The same letter means different things elsewhere. In a census sex column M is male, and in the color column of the 1850 to 1880 census M stood for mulatto. Read the heading of the column before deciding.
