In a census birthplace column, Md. is the abbreviation for Maryland.
Md. is an older abbreviation of Maryland, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.
Mo. is Missouri and Me. is Maine, and all three are easily confused in a quick hand. Check how the same enumerator wrote the letters on other lines.
