Me. is an older abbreviation of Maine, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820, so an older person born in Maine may show Mass. in some records and Me. in others. Do not confuse Me. with Md. or Mo.
