mngr.
mngr. or mgr. in a city directory means manager, usually followed by the business he ran for its owners.
City directory keys list mngr for manager, as in the Bay City directory of 1886-7, and later glossaries give mgr. The line normally names the firm he managed.
A manager ran a business for someone else. The census class of worker rules counted a hired manager as a wage or salary worker, not an employer, even if he hired staff.
