Musc.
Musc. in a military roster means musician, a soldier who served as a drummer, fifer or bugler.
Musc. after a name is the man's rank: musician. Companies carried musicians such as drummers, fifers and buglers. The Windham County list, made for War of 1812 and Mexican War records, uses Musc., while the Nebraska Civil War roster writes Musician in full and Bug. for bugler.
Watch for the clash with mus., which some rosters use for mustered into service. Position tells them apart: a rank sits next to the name, while mus. comes before a date.
