Nath.

Nath. is an old abbreviation of the first name Nathaniel, common in deeds, wills, church registers and census pages.

Nath. is a clerk's shorthand for the given name Nathaniel. Writers shortened common first names to save time and ink, usually by keeping the first letters and the last one or two, often with the final letters raised above the line.

Writers sometimes added the final l, as Nathl. Nathan is a separate name in its own right, so do not assume that Nathan and Nathaniel in different records are the same man without other evidence.
