par.
Par. is short for parish, as in "of this par.": the church district where a person lived, married or was buried.
Par. stands for parish (Latin parochia). In English and colonial records a parish was the area served by one church, and registers note whether a bride, groom or person buried was "of this par." or of another.
In Louisiana, parish is also the name for what other states call a county, so a Louisiana record of Par. may point you to a civil office rather than a church.
