Rev.
Rev. is short for Reverend, the title of a member of the clergy: Rev. Mr. Hale or Rev. Jno. Hale means the minister John Hale.
Rev. is the standard abbreviation of Reverend. In marriage records and notices it identifies the minister who performed the ceremony, which can tell you the couple's church or denomination.
Older notices often say "by the Rev. Mr. Hale" without a first name. If you need the minister's church, look for him in a county history or a denominational yearbook.
