S.C.

In a census birthplace column, S.C. is the abbreviation for South Carolina.

S.C. is an older abbreviation of South Carolina, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

S. Car. is an older variant. In faded handwriting S.C. and N.C. are easy to confuse, so look at the first letter closely and compare with other entries.
