Sgt.
Sgt. (older Sergt.) is short for sergeant, a noncommissioned officer who kept order among the enlisted men of a company.
Sgt. is the usual abbreviation of sergeant in muster rolls, pension files, service records and gravestones.
A company usually had a first sergeant and several other sergeants. A man promoted from private to sergeant will appear under both ranks in different documents, so search for both.
