Tex.

In a census birthplace column, Tex. is the abbreviation for Texas.

Tex. is an older abbreviation of Texas, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.

Texas was an independent republic from 1836 to 1845, but census birthplace columns still use Tex. for people born there in those years.
