Ark.
In a census birthplace column, Ark. is the abbreviation for Arkansas.
Ark. is an older abbreviation of Arkansas, used long before the two letter postal codes. Census takers were allowed to abbreviate state names in the place of birth column, so abbreviated state names are common in the birthplace column of nineteenth century census pages.
Ark. is the standard nineteenth century form. Arkansas was a territory from 1819 and became a state in 1836, so older settlers there were usually born elsewhere.
