Bronchitis
Bronchitis meant inflammation of the airways leading into the lungs; doctors were asked to write acute or chronic bronchitis on the record.
Webster's 1913 defines bronchitis as inflammation, acute or chronic, of the bronchial tubes or any part of them. IPUMS gives bronchitis and chronic bronchitis separate codes in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
The 1911 Census Bureau manual asked doctors always to state acute or chronic bronchitis. It counted capillary bronchitis, in the smallest airways, under acute bronchitis and not under its separate title for bronchopneumonia.
