Congenital malformation

Congenital malformation meant a birth defect, a body part formed wrongly before birth, such as a heart defect, spina bifida or water on the brain.

Congenital means present at birth. The 1911 Census Bureau manual lists congenital hydrocephalus, congenital malformation of the heart and spina bifida under congenital malformations, and IPUMS uses one code for congenital hydrocephalus, phimosis and congenital malformations.

Stillbirths were not counted under this title.
