Exophthalmic goiter

Exophthalmic goiter meant an overactive, swollen thyroid with bulging eyes, today called Graves' disease.

Wiktionary defines exophthalmic goiter as hyperthyroidism with protruding eyeballs. Wikipedia says the disease is named after Irish surgeon Robert Graves, who described it in 1835, and is also called Basedow's disease.

The 1911 Census Bureau manual gives exophthalmic goitre its own title, and IPUMS codes Graves' disease apart from other thyroid diseases.
