Fracture of the skull
Fracture of the skull meant a broken skull bone from a fall, blow or accident; it names the injury, not how it happened.
The 1911 Census Bureau manual called fracture of skull an undesirable return on its own. It asked that a certificate first say accidental, suicidal or homicidal, and then the means, such as a railroad accident; the lesion could be added but mattered less for statistics.
IPUMS has a code for fractures and dislocations. Search inquest records or newspapers for the event.
