Kicked by a horse

Kicked by a horse on an old record meant an accidental death from the kick of a horse or other animal, filed with injuries by animals.

IPUMS has a code for injury from animals in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules, apart from falls, machines and crushing.

The 1911 Census Bureau manual indexes kick by horse or other animal under injuries by animals, and asked that the animal be named. Doctors were also asked to say whether a death was an accident; the injury itself, such as a fractured skull, could be added.
