Hypostatic pneumonia

Hypostatic pneumonia was lung congestion and pneumonia in a person kept long in bed, as blood settled in the lowest parts of the lungs.

Hypostatic means caused by settling. Webster's 1913 explains hypostatic congestion as congestion due to the settling of blood by gravity. In a patient lying long in bed, blood pooled in the lowest parts of the lungs, which could then become inflamed.

IPUMS places hypostatic pneumonia with pulmonary congestion and lung collapse in its codes for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
