Inflammatory rheumatism

Inflammatory rheumatism usually meant acute rheumatism, now called rheumatic fever, with fever and hot, swollen, painful joints that could damage the heart.

Rheumatic fever follows a strep throat infection by a few weeks. It brings fever and painful, swollen joints, and in about half of cases it inflames the heart, which can leave lasting valve damage.

It struck children and young adults most often. A death from inflammatory rheumatism, or later from heart disease in someone who had it, is consistent with this illness.
