Leprosy
Leprosy was a disease of the skin and nerves that deformed hands and feet; American patients were later sent to the leprosarium at Carville, Louisiana.
Webster's 1913 describes leprosy as a skin disease with spots and nodules, loss of feeling in the skin, and deformity of the hands and feet. Wikipedia notes the National Leprosarium at Carville, Louisiana was the only leprosy hospital in the mainland United States.
IPUMS gives leprosy its own code in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
