Metritis
Metritis meant inflammation of the womb; on a young mother's record it usually meant infection after childbirth or miscarriage.
Webster's 1913 defines metritis as inflammation of the womb, from Greek for womb. The 1911 Census Bureau manual lists metritis among diseases that might be puerperal, and asked doctors to write puerperal before it when it followed childbirth.
Puerperal metritis is close to childbed fever.
